Breathwork is a type of somatic therapy, a form of healing that focuses on the mind-body connection. In somatics, it is believed that when you ignore or shove down your emotions instead of allowing yourself to feel them fully, they become trapped in the body, which can have a negative impact on your physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Somatic therapy believes that you can't think your way through emotional healing, you have to feel it to heal it.
During a breathwork session, you'll use intentional, connected breathing to distract the mind, go deep into the body, and reach an altered state of consciousness. While in this state, you're able to heal the emotional wounds that have been weighing you down and holding you back from reaching your full potential.
Your body is the healer and it knows exactly what to do. Every breathwork session is different. Some are very emotional and some are all physical sensations. Some are profound, while in others you may even fall asleep. Let go of any expectations and trust that whatever happens, it's exactly what your body needs in that moment.
Please bring an intention to your session. For example, something you want to release, a feeling you want to call in, or a question you want an answer to.
You will discuss your intention for the session with your practitioner. Then they will go over what you can expect, teach you the breath pattern, and ask for consent for hands-on support.
You will lie down and get comfortable. Your practitioner will guide you through a meditation to relax the mind and body, then guide you to begin the breath pattern. You will breathe along to a carefully curated playlist while your practitioner guides you with breathing cues and speaks to your subconscious through affirmations and intuitively channeled messages. After releasing the breath pattern, you will have time to relax and meditate before being gently guided back into the space.
You will be given time to journal and reflect on your session and then your practitioner will give you the opportunity to discuss anything that came up for you or ask any questions. The integration process can take a few days and you're encouraged to be gentle with yourself, rest, and hydrate.
